Questions and Answers
Below are answers to frequently asked questions.
If you have any more questions please email us at information@greenstewards.com.
I'd love to work as a steward. How do I make this happen?
To tell us you would like to work at a festival:
If you have never given us your details before, fill in the form.
I want to work
Log into the website with the username and password that will have been included in an email sent to you after stage 1 above. Your username by default will be your email address, though you can change this later if you wish.
Click on Tell us which festivals you want to work at in the right hand menu.
Click on the festival you want to work at
You have a choice of either registering your interest or securing your place by the payment of a deposit.
If you register you interest you can be sure to be included on any mailing that is reporting that we are getting full and a deposit is required.
You can look at your festival history at any stage by clicking on My festivals in the right hand menu (you need to be logged in to see this option) This will show you details of when you registered interest and/or paid a deposit.
Note: most work for us is voluntary i.e. You get into the festival for free but you do not get paid for the work that you do. No need to worry though, you will have plenty of time to enjoy the festival still.
I have worked with Green stewards before. How do I get involved in 2008?
If you worked for us in 2007 you likely already have an account. You can log in and then click on 'Tell us which events you want to work at / pay a deposit'.
I've fogotten my login details!
If you click on Username / password reminder in the right hand menu an email can be sent to your inbox. If you no longer use the email you signed up with originally you can simply sign up again (Fill out the form after clicking on 'I want to work').
When will the festivals for 2008 be announced?
As of March 2008, we are finalising details. We will add details to the website and let everyone know by e-mail as soon as we have confirmation for individual festivals.
Please make sure you have filled out the applciation form in the 'I want to work' section and updated your contact details where necessary.
What sort of work do I do as a steward?
This varies slightly for different events, but stewards are often described as the "eyes and ears" of the festival. Generally speaking you will be there to assist the public and help with the smooth and safe running of the event. Every steward will undergo an event specific briefing session prior to being deployed, and will have adequate supervision and support throughout each event.
How do I know what days I will work?
We will make it clear when you need to be available on site, prior to your signing up for any given festival. Once on site we will issue shift cards detailing all hours/days you will be required.
How many hours do I work?
Again this depends on the nature of the event. Volunteer shifts tend to be 6 hours long. Over a three day event, you will be expected to work three shifts in exchange for your ticket.
If the festival is longer you may get a day off. One example is the Big Green Gathering where you will work on 4 of the 5 days that the festival is open to the public.
Usually you will need to arrive on site at the festival the day before the gates are open to the public. This gives chance for a briefing and any pre-event training such as first aid, fire awareness or health and safety.
I am hoping to work with my friend. Can we have our shifts at the same time so we can enjoy the festival together?
Wherever possible, yes. If you make this clear when shift cards are issued, it shouldn't prove too much of a problem.
Typically how much notice do you get before each event as to whether you will be invited to attend/work?
The notice varies between events. With the larger events that require deposits the fact that you have paid a deposit means that you are confirmed. We close the ability to make a deposit if we have enough stewards. Smaller events can often be a bit on the last minute. As these usually don't require a deposit we have to accept expressions of interest from more people than we have places. So it may be that a few days before the event we have to tell a handful of people that they are not required. This is a unfortunate if unavoidable issue.
What about food?
Again this varies. Most festivals will provide a meal for each shift worked as part of the deal. You should expect to self cater and/ or purchase food in addition.
I'd rather not work at particular times (early in the morning or in the middle of the night, for example), can I avoid these shifts?
Unfortunately, the logistics of organising up to 500 stewards do not allow us to tailor individual shifts for a person. Likewise it has caused some disquiet in previous years if there is perceived to be anything other than a fair distribution of shifts. With this in mind we try as much as possible to give everyone one of each type of shift (for the Big Green Gathering those would be starting at 7am, 1pm, 7pm and 1am).
We do allow people to swop shifts. You may think that no one would want to do the shift you would rather not do. However, your shift may be perfect for the person not wanting to miss a band or a workshop.
How much deposit will I have to pay?
In general, the deposit we will take from you will be equivalent to the price of a full price ticket to the event in question.
How can I pay?
We will be taking deposits through our Nochex account. Once your payment is confirmed, we will e-mail you to confirm your place on the team.
Will my money be safe?
Absolutely! As long as you complete ALL shifts AND return any shift cards and equipment to us, we will refund your deposit in full. Until then it will be held in our Nochex account. No one else will ever have any access to it.
How do I get my deposit back?
Deposits will be returned by Nochex back to the account or card they came from.
I am on a low income and cannot afford a deposit. What can i do?
No deposit, no job.
Maybe you could borrow the money from a friend or family member who trusts you. It will be refunded after the event if you complete all shifts
Do I have to pay a deposit for every single festival that I work at?
Generally we use a deposit system for any ticketed event. Most festivals tend to be. We also work a number of local authority events which are not ticketed and do not require deposits
We now have a system in place where you can allow your deposit to roll over to the next event (providing you complete your shifts satisfactorily).
I have some friends / family that are not working. Can we camp together?
Your friends will be unable to access the dedicated crew camping areas. You may, of course, camp with them in the public area if you wish.
I'm hoping to work at several events this summer. How can I make this happen?
We are going to be building a solid team of event stewards and providing training and plenty of work for those who are willing and able. Keep an eye on this website "I want to work" section. We WILL be in touch.
I have 2 children and a husband, can they come as well?
Most festivals do not allow for discounts for individuals to accompany those that are working
Generally, you will need to buy full price tickets
I need to take off some time during the festival to attend an appointment. Is this a problem?
Once your shift card or work pattern has been issued, it will be clear to see when you are needed. Outside these hours, your time is your own.
Can I get any travel expenses?
We cannot cover the cost of travel to or from the event site.
I don't like using computers, how else can I work for you?
You must have an email address that you have access to and you must sign up on the site (by clicking 'I want to work' and adding your details). All email addresses must be unique as well. So if you have a friend who has signed up you cannot use their email address. If you are unsure - ask a friend to help.
Can someone give me a lift to the festival?
There are a couple of great websites that promote sharing the costs (both economic and environmental) of using cars. They are http://www.liftshare.org/ - and - http://www.freewheelers.com/.
I have previously told you I want to work at an event. How do I now pay my deposit?
You need to log into the website and click to say that you want to work at the festival once more. On the next page it will tell you that you have already registered your wish to work at the event but you have the opportunity to click to pay your deposit. You will then be sent to Nochex.
You do not need a Nochex account. A credit or debit card can be used. We cannot take cheques
Some of my details have changed since I first filled in the application form. How do I let you know these?
To tell us about any changes e.g. new address or telephone number please log into the website (click login in the right hand menu). You chose a password when you signed up - your username is your email (unless you have logged in and changed it). Then click on 'Edit your details'. Update your information and click on update to change your record.
If you cannot remember your login details please click 'Username/password reminder' in the menu to send a reminder to the email address you signed up with.
If I am confirmed as a steward, do I need a ticket or vehicle pass?
Often tickets are not issued to stewards before an event. If this is the case there will be a member of the Green Stewards team on site to verify that you are a steward and admit you into the festival site.
I said that I wanted to work at an event but I have not heard back from you.
Unfortunately, we have to accept expressions of interest from more people than we have places. This is because we need a good reserve of individuals for when others drop out unexpectedly.
For the smaller events you will probably receive a phone call to confirm your place. For the larger events that require a deposit, once you pay that deposit your place IS confirmed
